Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity served 416 families, creating 27 homeownership opportunities and 286 repairs and community projects in 2022. Habitat for Humanity utilizes volunteer labor and donations of money and materials to build and rehabilitate houses alongside the homebuyers. These homebuyers must come up with a down payment and put in hundreds of hours of their own “sweat equity,” the homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build more Habitat houses. The entire goal of the program is to create nice, safe, and affordable homes for low-income families.
